PRIVACY
What linr keeps, in plain words
linr shows the story around the song you are playing. To do that for you on any screen it has to keep a few things: your account, the songs your helper reports, and what you choose to add. This page says what, why, for how long, who helps us, and how to have it all deleted. linr sells nothing about you, shows no ads and uses no tracking cookies.
Who we are
linr is a small independent project run from Sofia, Bulgaria, by Niko Koukidis. For data protection law he is the controller of what linr keeps about you. Write to privacy@getlinr.com about anything on this page. A person reads it and answers.
What we keep
| WHAT | WHAT IT IS AND WHY |
|---|---|
| Your account | Your email address and a password (stored only in a scrambled form we cannot read). It lets you sign in and lets linr write to you about your account. A new account is confirmed with a one time code sent to that address. |
| Your profile | The nickname, country, avatar, favourite genre, team and plate you choose, your Last.fm user name if you add it, and your switches (the Friday letter, email notes). linr is listening together: other signed in listeners always see your nickname, country flag, avatar and the song you are playing. Never your email. |
| What is playing | What your helper reports: title, artist, album, the player's name, the cover, sound quality, position, volume, and the name you gave each computer. This is what puts the song on your screens. |
| Last played and your lists | Each song played, with the time, so you can see Last played. The songs you love, your wish list, your playlists and cassettes. |
| First heard | For each artist you play, the first time linr saw it (the player, the song and the weather then), and, only if you bring them in, the earliest date in your own Plex history or on Last.fm: one date per artist. Plex and Last.fm are read in your browser; linr never stores your Plex sign in. Only you see it, and you can hide any artist or remove an import in one click. |
| Shelf | If you connect Discogs: one line per record in your collection (artist, title, label, year, format, cover), read from Discogs in your browser, so the board can tell you when a song is already on your shelf. A Discogs token, if you use one, stays in your browser. Disconnect removes it. |
| What you write | Chat and forum messages, guest book notes, waves to other listeners, contact messages (with your email, so we can answer), votes on genres and moods, quiz answers and points, reports about a wrong picture or detail, the T shirt waiting list. |
| Your journal and to do | The pages, lines, tasks and notes you write, with the weather, place name and song of that moment. Only you can see them. |
| Commands to your helper | When you press play, next or volume on linr, a short command waits for your helper and is marked done. It is kept with the time so a lost command can be explained. |
| Sign in times | When you sign in, with your nickname and country, so the small team can see that the site works and spot misuse. |
| Letters sent | Which letter went to whom and when (the Friday letter, a mention, a note), so nobody gets the same letter twice. |
Most of this is visible only to you. Database rules make sure that another listener cannot read your account, your history, your lists, your journal or your to do. Only what you post in public places (chat, forum, guest book) and, if you switch it on, the song you are playing are seen by others.
What we never take
- Never your audio or your microphone. The helper reads only the title and artist your player already shows the computer.
- Never your files or anything else on your computer. The helper does not look at other programs, documents or browsing.
- Never your exact location. If you allow location for the weather, it is used in your browser. Rounded to about ten kilometres it is sent to our own server only to find the nearest airport weather report, and it is not stored.
- Never ads, never tracking cookies, never a sale of your data.
When you visit
When you open linr, the team receives a short note by email: the approximate city and country your network reports, the kind of device and browser, the page that sent you, and your nickname if you are signed in. It is sent once a day per browser and never for the team's own browsers. The note lives in the team's mailbox, not in linr's database, and is shared with no one.
Our host, Vercel, may also count page views without cookies (which page, your country, the kind of device and browser, and the site that sent you). It tells visitors apart only by a value that changes every day, so it cannot follow you over time.
Why we may
The law asks us to name a reason for each use. In plain words:
- To give you the service you signed up for (your account, your songs, your lists, your journal, your messages): because you asked for it, under the agreement in our terms.
- To keep linr working and safe (sign in times, letters sent, the visit note, command logs): our legitimate interest in running a small site well, which we keep as light as we can. You can object at any time.
- Location for the weather and the Friday letter: your choice. Location is used only after your browser asks you. The Friday letter can be switched off in your profile at any time, and every letter says how.
Who helps us
linr is built on a few services that process data for us under their own data protection agreements:
| SERVICE | WHAT IT DOES FOR LINR |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Holds the database and the accounts. Our project sits in the European Union (Ireland). |
| Vercel | Hosts the website and runs its small server functions. Vercel is an American company with servers around the world; transfers rely on the safeguards Vercel offers under EU law. |
| Apple iCloud Mail | Sends and receives linr's email (getlinr.com addresses). |
We do not give your data to anyone else, unless the law obliges us to.
What your browser fetches by itself
To show the story around a song, the page in your browser asks public music and weather services directly. They receive what any website receives (your network address and browser) and the question itself, such as an artist name or a rounded position. They do not receive your account. The main ones: MusicBrainz and the Cover Art Archive, Wikipedia, Open Library, Last.fm (through our server), Open-Meteo and BigDataCloud for weather and place names, LRCLIB for a few lyric lines, flagcdn.com for flags, ESPN and TheSportsDB for your team's scores, Google Fonts for the letters on the page. The full list of sources is in Notice and credits on the board.
linr keeps small things in your own browser, not on our side: your theme, your sign in session, and short lived copies of what it already looked up, so the page is quick. These are needed for the site to work as you set it. You can clear them in your browser at any time.
The linr browser extension
linr is also an extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Firefox and Safari. It works like this:
- It reads only the song a music page announces to your browser: its title, artist, album, cover, and whether it plays. It never reads what you type, your browsing history or anything else on a page. It does nothing on other websites unless you switch that on and your browser asks you first.
- To find a song's story it sends the artist, title and album to MusicBrainz, Apple's public search, the Cover Art Archive and Wikipedia. Nothing about you is sent with it.
- If you log in to linr in the extension, the song that plays goes to your own linr board, and your Loved and Wish lists to your linr account, the same as on this site. Your password goes only to linr's sign in service (Supabase) and is never kept by the extension.
- If you don't log in, your settings and lists stay in your browser. Removing the extension removes them.
- No ads, no tracking, nothing sold. The extension contains all of its code; it loads none from elsewhere.
How long we keep it
- Your account, profile, lists, journal and to do: until you delete them or ask us to delete your account.
- Last played: until you ask us to clear it or delete your account.
- First heard: until you remove an artist or an import, or delete your account.
- Shelf: until you disconnect it or delete your account.
- Messages in chat and the forum: until you or we remove them, or your account is deleted.
- Commands to your helper, sign in times and the letters log: they are short records for running the site, and we clear them as the site grows.
- Visit notes: in the team's mailbox, deleted as part of normal mailbox clearing.
When your account is deleted, everything tied to it in the database is deleted with it.
Your rights
You can ask us at any time to show you what we keep about you, to give you a copy you can take elsewhere, to correct it, to delete it, or to stop using it for a purpose you object to. Write to privacy@getlinr.com from the address of your account. We answer within one month, usually much sooner, and it costs nothing.
If you think we handle your data wrongly, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority: in Bulgaria that is the Commission for Personal Data Protection (cpdp.bg), or the authority where you live.
linr is not meant for children under 16. If you believe a child has made an account, write to us and we will delete it.
If something changes in what we keep, this page changes first, with its date below. If a change matters to you, we will also say so on the board or by email before it applies.
