The story

Swans are an Experimental Rock band formed in 1982 in New York City, by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira.

Emerging from the abrasive downtown No Wave scene, the band initially forged a reputation for unparalleled sonic brutality, defined by slow, crushing rhythms, heavy industrial percussion, and misanthropic lyrics on foundational albums like "Filth" (1983) and "Cop" (1984). The group's sonic trajectory slowly shifted in 1986 with the addition of vocalist / keyboardist Jarboe, introducing lush melodies, haunting acoustic arrangements, and neo-folk textures that expanded their identity well beyond noise rock, most evident in the album "Children of God' (1987). Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, they explored a vast range of atmospheric and art-rock territories, culminating in their highly influential, sprawling post-rock masterpiece "Soundtracks for the Blind" (1996) before Gira disbanded the project in 1997.

After fronting The Angels Of Light for a number of years, Gira reactivated Swans in 2010, ushering in a highly acclaimed second era characterized by long, repetitive, and transcendent wall-of-sound compositions. Backed by a older and newer members, including Norman Westberg, Kristof Hahn, Phil Puleo, Thor Harris and Chris Pravdica, the revived band achieved widespread critical adoration and unexpected chart presence with an epic trilogy of massive studio albums: "The Seer" (2012), "To Be Kind" (2014), and "The Glowing Man" (2016).
