The story
Splendid were a German guitar-pop band from Germering near Munich, active during the lively mid-1990s local music scene. They were part of the same close-knit circle of young bands that also included Sportfreunde Stiller and The Vertical Orange Car Crash. The scene was small, but busy, with musicians moving between bands, sharing stages and generally knowing each other.
The band featured Benedikt Köhler (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Günther Pöschl (guitar) and Thomas Süßmair (drums). On bass, Splendid went through three musicians in succession: Andi Erhard, Jochen Quindel and later Fritz Schönegger. Quindel was also involved in other local projects, including Goldberg and later Puma (3).
By 1996, Splendid were already playing shows around Germering, including performances at the local youth centre known as the Knast, where they were billed as German guitar-pop. Their song "Sommermädchen" later received exposure on VIVA, giving the band some visibility beyond the local scene.
